In undergrad, I followed the advice of older students and enrolled in a Guerilla Journalism course. That semester, I learned about digital storytelling and created a couple documentary shorts. One is featured on this page, and highlights the voices of activists who were demonstrating at the annual gathering to close the School of Americas (renamed Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) at Fort Benning, Georgia. Following undergrad, I studied for my Master’s degree and worked as an intern with Christian Peacemaker Teams Colombia. Digital storytelling is a huge part of international accompaniment work - and I had the opportunity to create two documentary shorts of my own in six months. One tells the story of five community leaders as they returned home after being imprisoned on false charges, another features a community elder and his reflections on old ways of living. There are two quick videos here: one a timelapse for Mountain Roots Food Project in Gunnison, Colorado, and the other a simple still shot of a cloudy afternoon in Pisco Elqui, Chile. The most recent work I produced was for Beyond English, a B-corp in Chile that teaches English in schools and in private courses; that film features two of my former colleagues discussing their project to reinforce foreign language concepts through art workshops.
