Our societies continue to understand the impacts of climate change, and how it exacerbates extreme weather events. While adapting to the impacts of climate change, people also refine ways of living. Near Las Marías, Puerto Rico, an old hippie and the sustainable community around his property explore alternative construction and design. Casa Mucaro is constructed using cement and up-cycled waste, decorated with items discarded and turned into instruments and art, and filled with a steady stream of visitors who are curious to learn about this community (although in December 2020, Bill announced he was shutting down due to increased concerns for his health during the Covid-19 pandemic). Growing food, generating electricity, and creating a sense of belonging - the people at Casa Mucaro showed us a bit of how they live. The main house may be perceived at first glance as an unstable dwelling constructed from trash - but the beauty and uniqueness of the building is as impressive as the fact that its open and dome-shaped design have enabled it to withstand the harshest hurricane winds that tear across the hilltop.
